Infusions

Infusion therapy is an effective way to treat a number of neurological disorders. By partnering with Marin Wellness Pharmacy, Huntington Headache and Neurology provides comprehensive care by fostering a high level of integrated therapies where patients are able to receive treatment in a comfortable setting. The infusions consist of medication administered by the physician into a vein through a catheter. Our team will provide you with an assessment and evaluation, educational literature, and additional support for an optimal experience.

Common neurological and non-neurological diseases treated with infusion therapy include:

  • Migraine / Chronic Headache
  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome
  • Chronic Pain
  • Multiple Scelrosis

Electroencephalography (EEG)

Electroencephalography is a test to measure the electric activity throughout the brain and in doing so, traces and helps diagnose neurological conditions such as seizures, epilepsy, head injuries, dizziness, headaches, brain tumors and sleep disorders. Administering an EEG test demands great attention to detail of electrode application, equipment preparation, and the recognition and elimination of artifact.

Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS)

Vagus nerve stimulation is a surgical treatment specifically used to reduce the length and severity of epileptic seizures. The stimulator sends mild electrical pulses of energy to the brain through the vagus nerve located at the left-side of the neck. The device is placed gently on that area to isolate the nerve. This technique was approved by the FDA in the 1990’s and has proven effectiveness in minimizing unprovoked seizures for patients with epilepsy.

Botulinum Toxin Injection

Botulinum Toxin Injections are used to treat a number of neurological disorders including chronic migraine, neck spasms, stiffness, spasms in the arms or legs following neurological injury, excessive sweating or drooling, and abnormal nerve pain.  It is important to keep in mind that the medication does not work immediately and patients are asked to visit the office for treatment every 12 weeks.  Dr. Apelian has received specialized training in botulinum toxin injections for the treatment of neurological diseases.

Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS)

Deep brain stimulation treats a number of neurological disorders including Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and epilepsy. Electrical impulses are delivered to the brain through electrodes and regulate communication between cells. As a trusted form of treatment, patients who receive DBS improve their quality of life and functionality while reducing the disability associated with the disease.

Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG / NCS)

Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are frequently performed together.  The procedures are used to assess the health of nerves and muscles in the arms and legs.  EMG / NCS results can reveal nerve dysfunction, muscle dysfunction or problems with nerve-to-muscle signal transmission.  During the NCS, electrical signals are measured using surface sticker electrodes to determine nerve function.  During the EMG, a small needle electrode is inserted directly into the muscle and the electrical activity in that muscle is recorded.
